Barbara was born in Canton, Ohio to Janet Glosser Baum and Harold Baum. She grew up in her teenage years in Ft. Lauderdale, FL before leaving for college in 1950. Barbara married Bob Patterson in December 1953 after graduating from Baylor University and they lived in Louisville, KY for six years while Bob finished two graduate degrees. They moved back to Waco in 1961 when Bob joined the Baylor faculty in the Religion department.
Barbara's husband is Dr. Bob Patterson, Distinguished Professor of Religion at Baylor University. Barbara had two degrees from Baylor: a Bachelor of Arts (Cum Laude) and a Master of Science. She was a wife, mother, college educator and a social worker. She had a double license from the state of Texas as a professional counselor and social worker. Barbara had a long career with the State of Texas and her last position before retirement was as a supervisor in the Child Protection Agency.
Bob and Barbara have two daughters, Lindy and Beth, and two grandchildren, Ashley Dehm, 17 and Austin Dehm, 13. Lindy is married to Brian Dehm and they live in Crawford. Beth Patterson lives in Ft. Worth.
Barbara was a very active participant at the First Baptist Church of Waco and a member of the Patterson Sunday School class. She loved to travel and took numerous trips to England, Europe, Russia, and the Middle East with her husband. She attended classes at Oxford University, England when her husband was on a research project there. Barbara participated on several archeological digs in Israel with the Baylor Archeology program and also worked at the Waco Mammoth site. After retirement, she was active in community projects and returned to her love of painting, which she did in her home studio.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors and medical technicians at Waco Oncology center for their skill in ministering to Barbara's cancer problems, and the staff at Providence Hospital and the Hospice at St. Catherine's Center. Barbara was thankful for a lifetime of friends and family who supported her in her months of illness. In lieu of flowers, Barbara has suggested that memorial gifts be made to the Gospel Cafe, 825 S. 10th Street, Waco, Texas 76706 or to the charity of choice.
